Reddish-orange aphid with black siphunculi - Hysteroneura setariae

Reddish-orange aphid with black siphunculi - Hysteroneura setariae
Chalmette, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 23, 2022
Found crawling on a piece of loose tarp in the backyard, near an colonized dandelion or similar

Looks Like Rusty Plum aphid. Grasses or fruit trees nearby?

Probably right!
Yep! This was taken in my backyard, which I let grow pretty wild, and I know for a fact that St. Augustine and rescuegrass like to pop up quite often.
However, while this might just be a rogue aphid, it seemed like they were quite heavily colonizing a nearby dandelion - would this raise any suspicions, or are aphids known to simply choose "unusual" plants sometimes?

No, they're host specific.
Those were more likely Uroleucon if they were red, that genus prefers Asteraceae.

https://influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Uroleucon_aphids.htm.

I can't think of any other aphid that's similar to this specimen / Hysteroneura setariae, and looking at the list of species that are known to colonize Dandelions, it doesn't match any of them.
