ID Request - Stegea eripalis

ID Request - Stegea eripalis
Schulenburg, Fayette County, Texas, USA
October 1, 2017
Genus Stegea, would indentify it as Stegea eripalis.
I sent this specimen to BOLD and their ID engine reported a no match. However, the MPG referenced BIN is all private with only one barcoded specimen out of 12. You can see this specimen in the Public Database at TXLEP462-17 and in BIN BOLD:ADK9224. I continue to be VERY frustrated with the BOLD private BINS where public species cannot be compared!

BOLD has only one well documented Stegea species, Stegea salutalis so I did a NIH Blast of my specimen with a S. salutalis from Arizona and there was only a 91% blast. The references closest BIN is for Glaphyria cappsi, so I did a NIH Blast of Mark Dreiling's Oklahoma specimen with my specimen. IT was also a 91% difference, but visually the Median and PM lines are way off. Therefore I conclude that my specimen is at LEAST a Stegea. There is a Stegea minutalis on MPG that has similar lines but there are NO specimens with barcodes and the location of this specimen is much closer to Stewart Marcus's specimen in Liberty County. I do not know how he made his identification.

.
Thank you, at last.

Agree with your ID
After a much longer review of MONA Fascicle 13-1B, I now agree with your proposed ID of eripalis. I have added a lot of info to the BugGuide species pages for Stegea. Texas is especially difficult with at least five species from the genus found there. We probably currently have a lot of misplaced images here at BugGuide, and I believe there probably some problems at MPG and BOLD as well.

Moved from ID Request. Review of MONA Fascicle 13.1B has me thinking this is probably salutalis, but will place a genus for now.
