Some Type of Cicada? - Neotibicen pruinosus - female

Some Type of Cicada? - Neotibicen pruinosus - Female
Lake County, Illinois, USA
August 30, 2008
Size: Approx 1"
There are so many insects singing in the trees this time of year, but I rarely see them. This one flew by me during the day & landed on a crabapple tree. Do you know what kind of insect this is? Some type of Cicada? And does it sing? Thanks ahead of time!

Moved from Tibicen.

Thanks for the additonal comments and ID.

Tibicen pruinosus (FEMALE)
I agree with Dr. Hamilton. The pale underside and pruinosity (chalky white) are suggestive of pruinosus.

Additionally, T. pruinosus is very common in the upper mid-South throughout much of the midwest (i.e. "greater region" of the Mississippi River drainage).

The cicada in this pic also has several other pruinosus characters including a pea green coloration (not the deep leaf greens & blue-greens seen in linnei), relatively pale green costal vein, tan legs with hints of a chalky greenish-tan (another very typical trait of pruinosus), slate colored eyes, and less pronounced black delineating the pattern (a trait seen more frequently in similar/related species - i.e. linnei, robinsoniana, and canicularis).

Re: Your Info
Thanks so much for the ID and the additional info! It certainly is appreciated!

Moving -
to genus page for now.

Cicada
Something in Tibicen genus maybe. Dog day harvestfly?

Thanks Jon. . .
for your educated guess re: the species. It's appreciated!

Tibicen
I'm guessing T. pruinosa, which has a contrastingly paler underside.
