spider, coastal North Carolina - Trichonephila clavipes

Size: 4-5 inches ?
This big guy has been living on the side of my house for a few weeks now, and recently made it through Tropical Storm Hanna. He is roughly the size of a adult woman's hand. I had planned on just letting him/her be, is there any risk with this sort of spider? What type is this, and what are their typical behaviors? Thanks for any information!
