Moved from Prionocyphon.

looks to be P. limbatus LeConte
Jim, I was looking up Prioncyphon in Downie and Arnett for another post, and found that there are only 2 species for the northeast. P. limbata (limbatus?) is keyed from P. discoideus by "prosternum tip dilated to form spearhead" (and simple vice complex antenna for males). Looks like yours may have a "spearhead" vice "tip not dialated, remains as vertical lamina same as between coxae".

see the LeConte type (with spearhead) here

Man,
I sure wish I had been using my salvaged photocopier lens then. I do see a shape that might be described as a spearhead, but is it the tip of the prosternum? I guess I'll move it but hope to verify it with another specimen so we can be certain. I never did return to that excellent swampy location this summer, so maybe next year.

or,
I don't really know how (or if) to tell male beetles from females (trust they do), but this one appears to at least have some details sticking out of the assumed location. Can you tell if this one's a male? If so, than the simple antenna do tell us WHICH male.

Ha!
I need a birds & bees lesson on arthropod reproductive systems I'm afraid.
