Entomobryomorpha
It could be Entomobryinae but cannot confirm it given the img is too fuzzy.

that's alright, i appreciate
that's alright, i appreciate the input! i struggle to photograph springtails, i'm hoping to get more practice and perhaps a macro lens attachment so i can get better pics :)

entomobryinae is what the ai suggestion on inaturalist said, i can bump the observation back up to family level!

is there any value to leaving this pic up on bugguide? i can remove it. you seem very good at springtails and if you can't do more with the pic then i doubt the pic is good enough to be taken any further.

IDing Collembola from images
is a garbage in garbage out system. If the input (the img) is fuzzy then the output (ID) will be fuzzy. This is also true for the AI. But possibly the AI has better vision ;-) Or more experience with fuzzy imgs... I prefer that you would leave the img at bugguide. It is always possible that somebody comes up with a better technique to ID fuzzy imgs. You can even keep it at Entomobryinae level but then you have to mention explicitly that you used the AI app of Inat for the ID.
Keep up the good work!

as i get better at taking pic
as i get better at taking pictures i can see more things and the more i learn about identifying little tiny creatures the more i realize they have little tiny characteristics i need increasingly better pictures to capture!
the "trail" of identifications is preserved on inat, along with comments (in this case, a link to the bugguide page) explaining the addition/withdrawal of ids. so people on there can see that i used ai to id it to subfamily level and then pushed it back to family based on this conversation, which is very easy to follow on the observation's page. i guess i will leave it at family level on here as well too unless someone else comes along :)
