Syrphid fly - Sericomyia chrysotoxoides - female

Syrphid fly - Sericomyia chrysotoxoides - Female
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
September 10, 2008
Size: ~15mm
Size, hairiness and dark shadows at wing edges all strike me as distinctive, but it's not one I recognize.

Moved
Moved from Sericomyia.

Nope
Not Chrysotoxum, antenna are too short!
This is a female Sericomyia sp.!

It is probably Sericomyia chr
It is probably Sericomyia chrysotoxoides.

Thanks, all, that does look right.
One confusing detail - the only other one in the guide marked female (below) describes it as very small, which is the opposite of what I thought - no-one else has a measurement on their image, but I know my 15mm is pretty close, as I took a shot of it next to my thumb.

Well
They can be very small, but a lot of species in Sericomyia are quite large, in between 10 to 15 mm, so that's okay!
there is often a considerable variation in size, even in between species.

sorry, deleted duplicate comment

Chrysotoxum.
Pretty certain this is going to turn out to be a species in the genus Chrysotoxum. Nice shot!
