This is attached to my cinder block chimney. The gold dots are metallic in color, like 14k gold.

Caterpillar skin still attached
It is interesting that the caterpillar's skin is still at the top of the chrysalis, it usually gets wiggled off. Your butterfly will make a remarkable journey when it emerges from the chrysalis. It will fly to the mountains near Mexico City and overwinter there. Late next winter (Feb.), after mating, if it is a female it will fly to southern Texas, lay eggs and then die. You can tell if you have a female butterfly by looking at the lower wings. The males have a prominent, raised black dot on one of the veins of each lower wing, the females don't.

You don't have to wait -
You can identify the gender from the chrysalis. See the link we posted in an earlier comment.

Crysalis of the Monarch Butterfly
