Centrocoris variegatus Kolenati
Moved from Leaffooted Bugs.
Harry Brailovsky det. His comment: "The shape of humeral angles of pronotum, color of antennal segments and shape of connexivum match. A new exotic record to the USA."
Alice, I've noticed another photo of same (a whole gang of'em, titled 'Coreid Leaf-footed Bugs') in your gallery -- could you pls post it, too?

Other Coreids

Other Such Bugs
Photo with two others here.

Measured at 1 cm. Note yellow antennae of all three of these.
This one was still for a long time so I do not think the camera just caught it flexing its wings. Strange straight back rather than curved back of others.

Googling Centrocoris
gives you some similar looking bugs. I can't find any proof that genus is even found in the US though. :)

Spot On!
The Centrocoris variegatus photos look closest. What made you consider Centrocoris? I live near SF Bay and we get exotics arriving all the time on the ships. I'll move it to Coreidae.

round-about searching
I just start googling and see where it leads. I can't remember how Centrocoris came about.

I wonder
if this could be a species of ambush bug, Phymata?

Similar, but..
I can see why it might be an ambush bug but I looked at every Phymata on BugGuide and don't see the "stripes" at the back. Any other ideas?

Other angles?
Do you have more shots and how big was it?

Added Photos
I've added two photos at different distances away.

I'd guess 2cm.

I'll have to start measuring - how do you measure without startling bug?

I just got my head chewed off for saying a bug was 1 to 2 cms. "That's like saying you are 4 to 8 ft tall!" No fun to get that comment thrown at me. I was talking cms not inches...

I have a lot of trouble providing sizes.
When push comes to shove, you may want to use the "approximate" sign, i.e. ~, or say you're making a guess. Digs like the one you experienced certainly don't encourage people to provide sizes. Sorry that happened to you!

Squash Bug?
I'm not certain, but with that general size and the long probiscus showing (I don't thing ambush bugs have them) it looks like a squash bug.

Right idea....
I'm pretty sure this will turn out to be a coreid (Coreidae), but I have no idea even what genus then:-)

Antennae Color Question
Is the all-yellow antennae significant?

Thanks for Coreidae id...
The Coreidae photos look right. I'll try to find it again, measure it and get different angle shots. Then TRY to find a similar image on the web :)
