Size: about inch
darkling beetle at Isenberg Crane Reserve 2023 May 06

most likely Eleodes gigantea
a straight dorsal photo is the best angle for ID;
also an accurate size is very helpful - of the 2 likely candidates, one (omi*ssa) is 15 mm and the other (gigan*tea) generally over 30 mm.

about 17 mm
Thanks very much.
I have reviewed my photos and the distance of the camera from the insect resulting in a new size estimate of 2/3 inch or 17mm.

Moved
Moved from Darkling Beetles.

Moved Eleodes or Coelocnemis
Moved from ID Request.

Leaning towards Eleodes since I don't think I'm seeing the fringe of golden hairs on the hind tibia
