I'm investigating whether i can use this species as a model organism in a lab experiment. I would appreciate any guidance as to narrow down to species.

With scales. I added a photo to check if what I'm seeing there is indeed scales though.

 
I'm not convinced
I see at least 1 scale but that is a body scale.
Try to focus on ant.1 and ant.2

 
No scales
I just checked ant don't see any on the antenna
