Banded Bee Fly

Banded Bee Fly
Stough Canyon Nature Center, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 18, 2023
Size: approx 1 cm.
Walking up the small trail behind the nature center, midday, sunny and mild. Several bee fly type insects were buzzing along the trail and landing on small rocks and debris. This one landed on a small flower. Very attractive, with coppery eyes and a black and white striped dorsal abdomen. Dorsal thorax appeared dark brown with a fringe of golden fuzz just posterior to the head. The photos show a slim line of white behind the eye outlined by a dark ring with a central projection between the eyes.
