Toe biter / water bug ? - Belostoma

Toe biter / water bug ? - Belostoma
Livermore , Alameda creek, Alameda County, California, USA
Size: 3/4 "
I flipped a board by a salty marsh stream and this is the only critter that I found under it . At first , I thought it was a Cockroach . It was dull in color , but interesting as I had never seen it before . I recalled seeing a picture in one of my bug books of a water bug called the " Toe biter " , and so I did not pick it up for a better photo . It is not as big as the ones that are mentioned in my guide books . I found it out of water , but close to it . Thanks for any comments . It seemed very slow and surprised to be found and maybe scared by the flood of afternoon light as I flipped it's shelter over . It was pretty bright light , so I only took a few photos of it , then put it's board back and left it alone . Sincerely Beth
