Purple Skimmer - Orthemis ferruginea

Purple Skimmer - Orthemis ferruginea
Gasparilla Island, Lee County, Florida, USA
July 25, 2008
I have never seen this color dragonfly before. Possibly a Purple Skimmer, Libellula jesseana? It was competing for perches with numerous scarlet skimmers.

My apologies and thank you
all for the ID. I was going through my older submissions and realized I had not returned to this one to thank everyone for the kind words and identification.

Moved
Moved from Dragonflies.

Roseate
John and Jane are correct that this is a Roseate Skimmer. Gorgeous pic!

Gorgeous
That is an absolutely stunning picture. I love dragonflies and have seen quite a variety of them, but I have never seen this coloring on one. :)

Nice colors, I live in Centra
Nice colors, I live in Central Florida. Where abouts is this Gasparilla Island in conparison to 436 and I-4?

What about Orthemis ferruginea - Roseate Skimmer
in the guide here?
