Robber Fly - Proctacanthus brevipennis

Size: 2.5" roughly
He flew short distances with a loud buzz that sounded similar to some grasshoppers I have heard.

I wish I could see the top of the thorax
to confirm this, but the preapical red rings on the femora suggest this is Proctacanthus brevipennis.
