Robber Fly - Proctacanthus brevipennis

Robber Fly - Proctacanthus brevipennis
Archbold Biological Station, Highlands County, Florida, USA
June 30, 2008
Size: 2.5" roughly
He flew short distances with a loud buzz that sounded similar to some grasshoppers I have heard.

Moved
Moved from Proctacanthus.

I wish I could see the top of the thorax
to confirm this, but the preapical red rings on the femora suggest this is Proctacanthus brevipennis.

I am sorry
for the belated thank you, but thanks all for the identification on my robber fly.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Moving -
to family page for now. Genus ID may well be correct, but I'm not an expert...

Giant Robber Fly
This is a Giant Robber Fly, Promachus sp.
