This is the only shot I got on this bee. He did not light and he did not stick around. I don't know if this is enough for an ID, feel free to Frass it if not. I can recrop closer if that would help. Thanks.

Carpenter Bee
Do these bees tend to hover a lot and are they solitary? I have seen two large bees/flies(?) hovering by shrubbery but neither one has landed yet so that I can get a photo (but I shall persist). They show white markings on the face.

I am no expert but, from what I have learned here, it sounds likely you are seeing male carpenter bees.
