crawling water beetle
Genus Peltodytes- look at http://www.waterbugkey.vcsu.edu/php/genuskey.php?idnum=1&o=Haliplidae1a&type=genus

Aha!
The distinct dark blotches on the pronotum place it in this genus. Thank you so much, Keith.

Haliplidae.
A "crawling water beetle" from the family Haliplidae. The image of its underside shows clearly the enormous coxal plates that are indicative of this family.

Enormous coxal plates.
Thanks for the keying info Eric. I guess it pays to flip them over and shoot their undersides on occasion.
