I've looked on this site for an answer but either keep missing it or just can't find it. Would you tell me which species this is? This syrphid, if indeed a syrphid, was quite large.

Moved from Sericomyia. Male Sericomyia militaris, matches image at Canadian National Collection, Sericomyia plate 1 with respect to small, dash-like maculae and absence of maculae on T2.

Yep
It's a male Sericomyia allright, but whether it is militaris or another one is not clear from this picture.
But it could very well be!
