I think these are aphids. They are on a Smilax vine. They were crowded towards the tip of the stem.
Apologies for the quality of the photos. I blame my assistant who wanted to continue down the trail sniffing and peeing on everything and not to stop for pictures. ;)

Wooly Maple Aphid
They alternate between Acer saccharum in the spring and Smilax spp. in the fall.
