Scarites subterraneus vs quadriceps
Hard to say which one based on the various viewing angles of the antenna segments shown in photographs. Stated body length would have helped. Antenna segment shape (moniliform vs elongated) and body size (less than 20 mm vs more than 20 mm) respectively are about the only distinguishing characteristics available in the literature for separating these two almost identical species. I have yet to find a specimen in any Wisconsin collection that truly fits S. subterraneus even though the literature says it's here. The hundreds I've seen in WI, many misidentified, all fit S. quadriceps = formerly "S. striatus". It appears that true S. subterraneus is a more southern & eastern species; not sure about westward. I know for a fact that true S. subterraneus is common in nearby Indiana. I'm not sure about status of species in other adjacent states like Michigan. A revision of North American Scarites is long overdue.
