Pandora sphinx moth -
Eumorpha pandorus
Perry Hall, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA
September 19, 2008
I think that this is a pandora sphinx moth. My question is, why is the first time we have seen one of these in our area after twenty years? Any reason other than just dumb luck?

You could live there for 70 years
and probably not see every species that occurs in your area. There could easily be something like 600+~ species there.
Even in a very urban enviroment.
The best way is setting up a moth trap and you'd probably find more.
You tend to see few with just a simple light.
Yes, its a Pandora.
