Zygoballus rufipes? - Zygoballus rufipes - male

Zygoballus rufipes? - Zygoballus rufipes - Male
Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma, USA
September 16, 2008
Size: ~4-5mm
A new species to me, and quite a beautiful one.

Zygoballus rufipes is my best guess based off images in the guide.

A close crop. What is going on here exactly? Now I recognize the chelicerae, the (big) fangs, and the palps... but what the hell are those weird mouthpart looking things?! I've never seen anything like that on a jumping spider.

All the better to eat you with!
That is just a part of their chelicerae. I've observed these guys in captivity taking down prey much larger than themselves. I would imagine that "hammerjaw" has something to do with it.

Great shots
Now I'm wishing the individual I found was a mature animal...those jaws and front legs are amazing, the last shot of his fangs and mouthparts is astounding. Great work!
