P. volupialis? - Pyrausta volupialis Plymouth Elementary School, Monrovia, Los Angeles County, California, USA July 3, 2023
In the Emerald Necklace native plant garden. Semi-hovered en masse around the tips of its larval hosts at night. All Pyrausta there were able to fly normally despite the presence of a lit lamp.
The invertebrate community there is largely (if not wholly) composed of degraded-habitat species like this one. It previously had an unusually high density of herbivores, but after several wasps seemingly discovered the place the caterpillars started vanishing en masse. Nevertheless, Pyrausta spp. and several leafhoppers remain extremely abundant despite other moths experiencing lowered densities.
