caterpillar -
Hemaris diffinis
Troy, Lincoln County, Missouri, USA
September 18, 2008
Can someone please ID this caterpillar. It wasn't moving and I touched it and it was rather stiff, so I'm not sure whether it was still alive, haven't checked back. Thanks.

Certainly doesn't look healthy.
I'm thinking those two holes on the side are where some kind of parasite emerged; maybe a tachinid fly?

agreed
it looks a bit "deflated"--most at this stage should look pretty plump, whereas this one doesn't.

Thanks for the ID and prognosis of this caterpillar. I went back to check on it and it was for sure not alive. I am raising the
purple one
