Male Xylocopa virginica.
Females don't hover like this. From the front he should have a white face:-)

Looks like a carpenter bee to me, too
going by the shiny abdomen.
Nice image, but for ID purposes, please crop all your shots to show as much detail of the creature as possible. Only editors can see the full-size images you submit. You could add a cropped image to this one if you prefer not to replace it.
