Moth -
Catocala piatrix
Deville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA
September 2, 2008
Found during day while cutting away a downed tree on roof during Gustav. Might have been there from the night before due to porch lights (at least until power was lost:))

Thanks to Jonn for questioning the original ID. Upon a second look, it does in fact match better with
piatrix
, particularly the AM line and apical area.

J.D.:
Thanks for your help with this one. I will move this to species and invite anybody to comment with any reason they might agree or disagree with moving it.

Reminds me of...
... one of the underwing moths in the genus Catocala.

I would have to agree...
This does look to be
Catocala
but I can't narrow it down to a species. Too many options. I will leave the image here for a couple of days and see if anybody can get a species figured out.
Thanks for you help Carmen!

And another opinion...
Catocala amestris
.
This has been suggested by the creator of http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com

Catocala
I didn't go with
amestris
for a couple of reasons. In
amestris
the AM and PM lines typically appear doubled, rather than single lines. Also, the forewings of
amestris
are generally more contrastingly colored with a distinctively more pale subterminal area. It's definitely a close call between the two, but I still am inclined to lean toward this being a worn
muliercula
. But with it being a little worn,
amestris
is definitely a possibility that's hard to rule out. A hindwing shot would've clinched it one way or the other. Maybe we can get a couple more opinions though, and confirm this fella to species.
