Sebago Lake, Maine, USA
July 8, 2008
Size: 1 1/2 inches
This large insect was found floating in a bucket of water. He was removed, photographed, and several hours later managed to go off on his own. I have never seen one before, so would like an identification. Thanks.

Thanks
Thanks, I appreciate your identification of this. That would make sense, since there are a lot of sugar maples in that area.

Sugar maple borer
Glycobius speciosus (Say), one of the most beautiful of the longhorn beetles.

Nice shot of a beetle, I believe a longhorn beetle. Someone else will likely tell you more.

What a beautiful insect!
Similar to our images of Megacyllene robiniae (Locust Borer), although the pattern on the pronotum and elytra looks a little different. Perhaps just a variant? Please wait for an expert to comment.
