found this creepy thing on my computer table the other morning. Is it an earwig? What's the use of a creature like this?

They mainly eat decomposing wood

 
Male European earwig.
Forficula auricularia is the species. Actually, they are highly omnivorous, will scavenge as well, and at least occasionally nibble on the foliage and flowers of live plants.
