Southern pink moth caterpillar - /Pyrausta inornatalis/ ?
This looks like a /Pyrausta inornatalis/ caterpillar. They feed on salvia as shown in the photo.

After looking at other images on line
I think you are right. And Pyrausta inornatalis moths are common in my garden. Thanks! Good enough for my own files, but I'll leave here for BG!

I stumbled across your photo a few days ago...

I AM NOT an expert, but they seem similar enough to investigate. Not all the Palpita moth species have caterpillar photos posted for comparisons.
