You can actually see the metanotal gland behind the wings. I'm still hoping to find one in Wisconsin. Since there is no ovipositor, and a metanotal gland, this is a male. Did you happen to hear him or others singing? Do you know the name of this particular plant you photographed him on?

This male was not singing but several very nearby were. I think the plant is Palmer Amaranth, a favorite of this species.
