Bugfest 2005 in Raleigh, NC

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
Raleigh, NC
Saturday, August 13, 2005
Official Site

As the nation's largest single-day bug event, BugFest—held annually at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh—offers quirky bug-filled fun for adventurous people of all ages. Learn about arthropods, which make up three-quarters of all animals on Earth.

See unusual insects, arachnids, and crustaceans from around the world. Taste delectable dishes featuring creepy crawlers as a major ingredient at Café Insecta.

Educational and entertaining displays, exhibits and activities—both inside and outside the Museum—will highlight BugFest! Don't miss the Roachingham 500, Bee Bearding and other special events.

I just wanted a dedicated post for this event so we can discuss any plans. As of now, there are no plans for a booth. However, I'll contact them and see if I can just provide a static display that doesn't require as much effort or constant attention during the event.

I am currently planning to be there, and I know some others had plans to attend as well. I'm hoping Patrick or someone more familiar with the area will make some suggestions on where we might be able to gettogether just to meet and maybe do some bughunting.

Confirmed
I'm definitely going to this event and will be at the fair Saturday afternoon, perhaps earlier. Current plans are for a few of us from BugGuide to get together Saturday evening for a meal and to do some bug hunting on Sunday, weather permitting.

If you're interested in getting together with us, email me beforehand or just call me this weekend on my cell, 4044418568.

Bug Fair....
Well, I have a conflict with a military function on Saturday. I'm hoping to do both. However, that means we'll arrive late on Saturday....around 3 PM? Is there a plan for us to meet? Is bughunting on Sunday still a go?

Plans?
Yes, we should definitely firm up some plans. I'm flying in Friday night and leaving Sunday afternoon. I'll enjoy seeing the bug fair, but I wouldn't go just for that. I'm more interested in getting together with some fellow BugGuiders.

Whoever's interested could maybe meet for dinner after the BugFair Saturday evening. A gettogether to hunt for interesting bugs on Sunday morning/afternoon sounds great also.

I know Patrick said he didn't think he would have time to organize things and I'm happy to pick a place and time. Any suggestions for where we might go? For that matter, any suggestions for where to stay in town for the BugFair?

Please, do let me know who's interested. I might just prefer to stay home if there's no opportunity to meet some of you.

Wish I Could Go
I have obligations that weekend and Raleigh is a little too far to drive in just for the evening. :( Have fun and take lots of pictures.

Question
Would it be possible for us to list bug goings on in our areas? We don't have anything on the scale of bugfest, but our local Audubon chapter is holding our local butterfly count next week and I know other areas are or have held them lately as well. I know there are other activities around the country as well. Is there any way for us to post such things so that the general population can see upcoming activities in their areas that they might not normally know about and thus increase interest and participation in those events?

Just create a general discussion topic...
...with the details and any links to additional information. When I see a new event, I'll update the calendar box with some info and a link to the forum topic.

Thanks.
Thanks Troy, done.

BugFair
I totally missed out. I hope it was a blast.

I found the oddest bug. It looks like a lacewing on steroids with a funky snout! I haven't had a chance to photo it yet.

Sorry not to join you all.
I have a 7-week-old baby, and hoped she would be the kind that likes long car rides, but she's the kind that screams instead, so no trips to Carolina for a while. Maybe next year? Hope you'll report back and post lots of pics.

bugfest
I hope the bug-guide group decides to have some of our own get togethers throughout the year, regionally or otherwise. It would be nice for members to meet each other.
