Banded Alder Borer between my finger and thumb - Rosalia funebris

Banded Alder Borer between my finger and thumb - Rosalia funebris
Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, USA
October 2, 2008
This beetle was slow to fly, quite easy to work with, and though it hissed a little yesterday, it was very docile today. I picked it up many times, moved it around the yard and let it crawl on my hand. It was never aggressive. However, it is best to let it crawl onto your fingers because it doesn't like to be "pinched". It also did not like the feel of dog hair, and would not sit on my dog.

First off...
...I just wanted to compliment you on some lovely photos of what is truly an awesome looking beetle. Now, while I can understand completely your wanting to hold it in your hand or pose it on those beautiful purple flowers, I just have to ask -- Why were you trying to make it sit on your dog?! (LOL) Not that you didn't glean some good scientific info from the experience... now we all know that they have an aversion to dog hair. Or is it just an aversion to animals they know might try to chew on them?

:)
My dog has nice black and white markings. I was doing it purely for the color effect. I don't think the dog appreciated it either!

Aaah...
...well, I can understand that. Hopefully both the beetle and your dog forgave you your transgressions in the pursuit of photographic artistry.
