Cicindela formosa gibsoni - Cicindela formosa

Cicindela formosa gibsoni - Cicindela formosa
Near Maybell in NW Colorado, Moffat County, Colorado, USA
September 30, 2008
I identified this large tiger beetle using the Tiger Beetles of US and Canada by Pearson, Knisley & Kazilek as C. formosa gibsoni. Individuals of this species were red to purplish with different amounts of creamy white varying from quite a bit of red, as in this one, to the lighter color nearly covering the elytra with only a small crescent of red. This one wasfound in a sandy area near Maybell, Colorado along with C. festiva and C. lengi. Please let me know if you can confirm or correct my identification.
Thank you,
Dona

Gorgeous
What a beautiful beetle. Pearson, Knisley, and Kazilek (2006) actually surmises that the pale populations of C. formosa in Colorado and in Saskatchewan may have arisen independently in these separate regions due to similar environmental conditions.

I concur. Great pictures as always! Barry Knisley and I are getting together at the end of the month to do some collecting. I'll tell him his Field Guide is being put to good use.

Thank you
Thanks, Dennis, for the confirmation. Please do tell Barry Knisley, and his co-authors, that the field guide is great source of information. I only started getting somewhat serious about photographing and trying to identify the local tiger beetles a couple of months ago and they have quickly become my current obsession.

Have a great collecting trip,
Dona
