Trichonephilia clavata Joro Spider - Trichonephila clavata - female

Trichonephilia clavata Joro Spider - Trichonephila clavata - Female
Aiken County, South Carolina, USA
October 28, 2023
Size: approx 3.5 without legs
Web is above a pathway in my wooded backyard. This is the second Joro I've spotted in our yard this month. They are beautiful. I have not seen any of our native Golden Orb Weavers this year.

Nice find.
I found your comment about the Golden Silk Orb-Weavers (Trichonephila clavipes) interesting. I too have noticed the same absence here in central Alabama. In an average year, they are very numerous around my rural property, but this year I haven't seen a single one! It makes me wonder if the unusually cold weather we had around Christmas last year is to blame. It didn't get above freezing for about a 4-day stretch, and a couple of the lows at night dipped down to 11 degrees F. If indeed that is the reason for their absence, I'm wondering how long it will take for the population to recover.

Joro Spider
Good question. Perhaps the Joros are more adapted to the cold? Maybe they tolerated our unusual stretch of freezing temps better than others? Time will tell.
