Yes...
this species (like
E. guttulata
and
varia
) is popular with fly fishers (and trout).
E. simulans
is now the only extant
Ephemera
species with a range that extends through the West. The Western species
E. compar
was recently declared extinct.
In lakes and larger streams/rivers where they cohabit, the emergence of
simulans
is followed by the emergence of even larger members of the Ephemeridae like
Hexagenia limbata
(throughout its range) and
Hexagenia rigida
(in the East/Midwest). All of these species have a reputation for bringing big trout to the surface to feed.
