Green Butterfly - Colias eurytheme - female

Green Butterfly - Colias eurytheme - Female
Milford, Oakland County, Michigan, USA
October 5, 2008
Size: Less than 2"

Moved from Colias.

C. eurytheme
would be my call. This based on the clearly very wide dark border on the forwing (shows through from above), the strong dark dots, the prominent pale-centered spot on the forwing, and the shape of the wings (a bit cocave along both the upper and outer edges of the front wing). Perhaps none of these alone is enough to be sure, but the combination favors C. eurytheme. The dark scaling (where it looks greenish) favors C. philodice, but it is not unusual to see it on cool season C. eurytheme, especially white form females (which this one is).

Orange Sulphur?
I'm not an expert, but it looks to me like you've photographed Colias eurytheme, the Orange Sulphur.
Check this one out for comparison

C. philodice v. eurytheme
It can be next to impossible to distinguish female clouded from female orange sulphurs--if you have Brock & Kaufman's field guide, see pgs. 60-61. Both are widespread in the area where you photographed this specimen.
