Do I see a Mayfly or another species? - Megarhyssa macrurus

Could you help identify this bug? My friend saw it in Santa Fe, New Mexico this weekend.

I believe it's in the mayfly family but, haven't found a specific match on many sites I've checked.

Thanks much!

This is a melanized female Giant Ichneumon wasp (Megarhyssa macrurus).

Not mayfly.
This is some kind of ichneumon wasp, family Ichneumonidae. No, that is not a stinger, it is her egg-laying organ, called an "ovipositor." This species probably parasitizes wood-boring beetle larvae.

Thanks!
Thanks, you've been very helpful. I'll look this up :)
