size is exaggerated
2 inches max. This one looks like about 1.5 inches, maybe a little more. If it is 3 inches, it is probably the largest one ever found, and that is the hand of a giant in the photo. :0)

Jerusalem cricket.
Not a true cricket, but a relative. Not dangerous, mostly nocturnal. Can be host to something called a "horsehair worm" that drives the insect into water. The horsehair worm then emerges, awaiting its next host. Not sure if dogs are a host of these worms....
