Bombylius diegoensis - Bombylius breviabdominalis - male

Bombylius diegoensis - Bombylius breviabdominalis - Male
Rancho Palos Verdes, Forrestal Nature Preserve, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 25, 2005
Males of B. diegoensis appear black with a white tail. The white fringing on much of the body is an artifact of using a flash in taking the picture. This species is distinguished from B. major, which also occurs at this site, by the spotting on the wings.

Identification from the 1989 PV/South Bay Audubon field guide to bee flies drawn by Rick Rogers.

Fantastic shot!
How did you do it?

These were shot with a Sony digital camera at 1/800 sec, with low flash. The distance to the fly was only a few inches. I took a lot of shots of empty space, vague blurs and half-bugs to get these.
