Mojave ants - Veromessor pergandei - female

Mojave ants - Veromessor pergandei - Female
Kelso Dunes, Mojave National Preserve, California, USA
July 23, 2008
Size: ~4 mm
The mound was a 55 cm wide crater edged with creosote bush seeds... When I revisited it the next morning, these ants were there too

so I'm not sure which ones it actually belonged to.

Moved
The Pogonomyrmex is strictly diurnal, while the Messor is more crepuscular/nocturnal. In this case, it seems one of the species was foraging in the trash of the other.

Moved
Moved from Ants.

Shining dark brown ants...
are Smooth Harvester Ants (Messor sp.). The red ones with black gaster are Rough Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex sp.). It is quite possible that the latter took over the nest of the former in order to plunder their "crop" of seeds.
