Backwards Spittlebug - Clastoptera proteus

Backwards Spittlebug - Clastoptera proteus
Stark County, Ohio, USA
July 2, 2005
Size: less than 1/4 inch
I love these cute little critters with the false eyes on their butts! It's nearly impossible to photograph them head-on because they turn to present their butts every time you get close to them. Dogwood Spittlebug?

Clastoptera proteus
Yes, another color variety of the dogwood spittlebug ("proteus" means changeable).
