Silver Wasp - Astata - male

Silver Wasp - Astata - Male
Daphne (Village Point Preserve), Baldwin County, Alabama, USA
October 9, 2008
I was more interested in getting a good shot of a Painted Lady to spend much time on this rather stocky-bodied, metallic looking wasp. I really don't have much information in this photo for me to ID. I'm equally confident that there is enought info for you wasp specialist to ID. Without further ado, if you please? Thank you.

Male Astata sp.
No question, this is a male Astata sp., family Crabronidae. The holoptic eyes are diagnostic for this subfamily. Males are territorial, perching on a high point and dashing out at warp speed to intercept passing females or rival males, then returning.

You The Man
Thanks.
