Size: ~1mm and <1 mm bodies
Courting globular springtails (male at the top with modified antennae) on Cladophora algae in an enclosed heated freshwater (rain and aged city water) garden pond; ~65 degrees F, PH 8.5, at 4:20 p.m. If correct, the male is an adult having linked antennae with the female in courtship, however, according to expert, Frans Janssens, the female will moult one last time after her antennae are released in order to become a sexually reproductive female instar before taking up the spermatophores the male will deposit onto the water surface film. A female involved in courtship is considered a subadult; not a juvenile, and not yet an adult, if the knowledge shared has been understood correctly.

Perfectly understood
I could not say it any better :-)
In the subadult female the female reproductive organs are fully developed but the gonopore (genital opening) is not open yet. After moulting the gonopore is open and the reproduction organs are fully functional.

Thank you,
Frans Janssens, you are an excellent teacher! Grateful to learn about these tiny creatures in such detail.
