Found these on a rotting log going to town on a dead beetle (I think) that had gotten stuck in the trees sap...

Myrmicinae: Solenopsis
Can't really see the technical diagnostic characters, but shininess and slight bicoloration, and gestalt more readily seen in the large vversion, indicate

Yes...
I think you found a group of red imported fire ants here (Solenopsis invicta) which are unfortunately very common in Florida and Texas (where I used to live).
