Shield-backed bug (Scutelleridae) (?) - Symphylus caribbeanus

Shield-backed bug (Scutelleridae) (?) - Symphylus caribbeanus
Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 24, 2008
Size: ~1/2 inch
I found this guy inside my friend's house during Hurricane Gustav...didn't realize how neat it was until I saw other shield-backed bugs on the guide and realized that's what it was...I didn't even know an insect existed where the elytra are fused together like that! So, does this mean they can't fly? This is just interesting to me...

Moved
Moved from Shield-backed Bugs.

Diolcus chrysorrhoeus, i suspect
elytra not fused, they're fairly good fliers and pull out both pairs of wings from under that shield (=enlarged mesonotum)
