Desert Cloudywing Achalarus casica - Achalarus casica

Desert Cloudywing Achalarus casica - Achalarus casica
Box Canyon, Pima County, Arizona, USA
September 27, 2008

Hello Ken -
Pretty sure this is a Desert Cloudywing, Achalarus casica. Yours is the best image of this species on bugguide, check it out.

Acacia Skipper
Hi Ken. This an old post I know, but I'm almost certain this is an Acacia Skipper (Cogia hippalus). The pattern of the darker bands on the hindwing plus the larger glassy spots on the forewing are more consistent with C. hippalus.

Bob,

Thanks. How did you rule out Arizona Skipper? I'm hoping the thin brownish streaks in the unh white marginal band aren't diagnostic, because the image isn't sharp enough.

Ken

The Arizona
Skippers I've seen have noticeably larger white spots near margin of front wing undersides as in

Also, I don't think the thin brownish streaks are diagnostic at all - have never seen any authority refer to that characteristic.

Desert Cloudywing
I see what you mean. Stewart et al. (Butterflies of Arizona) refer to the brown streaks. I agree with your identification based on the extent of white.

Right -
I'd forgotten.
