Poling's Giant Skipper (Agathymus polingi) - Agathymus polingi

Poling's Giant Skipper (Agathymus polingi) - Agathymus polingi
Molino Basin, Santa Catalina Mts, Pima County, Arizona, USA
October 14, 2008
Size: ~4cm
Molino Basin is well known for its population of Poling's Giant Skipper, however this is the first one I've seen. I went there looking for this guy, but didn't expect to find it really. Have been there many times before, but this is the first time I noticed the abundance of Shin-dagger (Agave schottii), Poling's larval food plant. Note on this image the arrangement of the 2 prominent white dots on the hindwing (unders). This is the spatial pattern in the image in "Butterflies of Arizona" (Stewart, Brodkin & Brodkin). The dark median band is also somewhat diagnostic. Hope someone will make a page for it.

I think you are correct
Making a page for the species right now.

Thanks
David.
