Elm Sawfly - Cimbex americanus
Stowe, Lamoille County, Vermont, USA

Seen at and above the tree line on Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's tallest mountain. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the end of each leg was yellow/orange, similar color to antennae (see the back-right leg resting on the blade of grass). This thing was huge, 1+ inches. I'd love to know what it was.

Hymenoptera -
I think - looks a bit like Cimbex americana - but please wait for one of our experts to comment.
