Blue Beetle - Chariessa vestita

Blue Beetle - Chariessa vestita
San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA
September 26, 2008
Size: Approximately 1.5 cm
We found this bug hanging around a tree branch we cut off our tree two days ago. There were two, one male and one female. We actually caught them when they were mating, and later released; sorry no pictures of this. We thought this bug was extremely strange for our area, as have never seen it before.

Wow.
Some kind of "checkered beetle" in the family Cleridae. I'm not familiar with Texas fauna, so maybe someone else here can give a genus and species. These are predatory on other kinds of insects, including bark beetles, so they should be considered beneficial, not harmful.
