Nisquallia Ovipositing - Nisquallia olympica - female

Nisquallia Ovipositing - Nisquallia olympica - Female
Sunrise Ridge Trail, Olympic National Park, Clallam County, Washington, USA
October 18, 2008
I watched this female ovipositing for some time.
She would force her abdomen between the bits of shale, then rotate around, and finally pull out and move to another spot.
I excavated a couple of her holes down to solid rock (one or two centimeters), but didn't see anything that could have been an egg. Maybe she was looking for a spot she could drill deep enough.
I will post a page with more photos and video soon.

Nisquallia olympica ID Confirmed
Last summer, I collected about a dozen specimens for Tim McNary, of APHIS, Ft. Collins, CO. After studying the specimens, he writes:
"I want to let you know that all the specimens that Stephen sent were consistent with Nisquallia olympica."

More photos, video
I've added a page with more ovipositing photos, and two short video clips to Olympic Natural History.

test drilling
I've never seen grasshoppers drill test holes (or maybe dry holes is a better comparison). Reminds me of trying to set posts on my property. I suppose most grasshopper species don't have to deal with a habitat that is alost entirely rock.

Anyway, I suspect that you've got it right. Probably couldn't go deep enough, so aborted. Unless this species is unusual in how it deposits eggs, they should be in a big glob of many, and very obvious.
